BIOGRAPHY
An aspiring and diverse pianist, Lydia Shan has been playing the piano for over 13 years and has since expanded her musical career through performance, collaborative projects, and teaching. Lydia currently holds an ARCT diploma with honours in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Canada. In addition to this, she has performed in many venues such as the Musical Mosaic Concert Series at the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church and local music festivals - earning the sonata award at the CCC Music Festival.
Lydia is currently studying with the distinguished Dr. Midori Koga at the University of Toronto. She has been the recipient of multiple scholarships notably the Arthur Edward Redsell Scholarship and the Arthur Plettner scholarship (Awarded to outstanding students demonstrating musical and academic potential). Throughout her music education, Lydia has also received masterclasses and coaching’s from renowned professors such as Yoshikasu Ngai, Wei-Lung Li, Catherine Hong and James Giles.
In pursuit of expanding her passion for collaborative performance, she had the opportunity to participate in the Piano Trio program at Orford led by the Gryphon Trio. As a collaborative pianist, she has worked alongside multiple choirs and such as Ruckus The UTSC Alumni, St. John of the Cross Children’s choir and the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Concert and Jazz Choir. She also enjoys accompanies instrumentalists and works with North York Suzuki School of Music and Harmony school of Music and Dance as an accompanist. As the leading collaborative pianist for Mrs. Wang’s Violin Studio, Lydia has accompanied many solo performances for auditions exams at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Lydia also plays a variety of genres including musical theatre and has performed with the Victoria College Drama Society for their production of Mamma Mia.
Along with her enthusiasm for collaborative performance, she enjoys being a music educator. She has been teaching piano since the age of sixteen at various organizations such as Wizz Kidz Yamaha Music, Music Box Children’s Charity, and her own teaching studio. She has also taught group music lessons at Merriam School of Music and National Music Camp. Lydia is a advocate of community involvement and is actively involved in outreach as part of Fridays For Future, Musicians at your door and the Music Mentorship program at the University of Toronto. Lydia wishes to continue to inspire the growing community of young musicians as well as expanding her own musical career.
